What is pregnancy care (antenatal care)?
Pregnancy care (antenatal care) is the set of visits, scans and blood tests that keep you and the baby safe through the nine months. Most pregnancies are healthy. The visits exist to catch the few problems early, when they are simplest to treat: low haemoglobin (anaemia), sugar in pregnancy (gestational diabetes), rising blood pressure, a baby growing slowly, or a placenta lying low.
It starts when your home test turns positive. A scan confirms the pregnancy is inside the uterus, checks the heartbeat and fixes your due date. Then you come once a month until 28 weeks, every two weeks until 36 weeks, and weekly after that. Each visit records your weight, blood pressure, the size of the uterus and the baby's heartbeat.
The same doctor sees you at every visit and delivers you. Dr. Ragavi has 17 years in obstetrics and a special interest in high-risk pregnancy care, so your care stays with her if something comes up.
When you should see a doctor
Book as soon as the test is positive. Between visits, come in without waiting if you notice:
- Spotting or bleeding in early pregnancy, even a small amount
- Vomiting so much that you cannot keep water down
- Burning while passing urine, fever, or pain in the lower back
- Swelling of the feet that is still there in the morning
- Tightening pains that come regularly before 37 weeks
If you have had a miscarriage before, or you have diabetes, thyroid disease or high blood pressure, say so at the first call. Those pregnancies are followed more closely under high-risk pregnancy care in Chennai.
How pregnancy is confirmed and checked at RV Clinic
Confirming the pregnancy. From about six weeks after your last period, a transvaginal scan shows the sac inside the uterus and the heartbeat, rules out a pregnancy in the tube (ectopic pregnancy) and gives your due date (dating scan).
First-visit blood tests. Haemoglobin, blood group and Rh type, thyroid (TSH), blood sugar, and screening for infections such as HIV, hepatitis B and syphilis. If you are Rh negative, the anti-D injection is planned early.
Scans through the pregnancy. The NT scan at 11 to 13 weeks with a double marker blood test. The anomaly scan (TIFFA) at 18 to 22 weeks, which checks the baby's organs, spine, heart and limbs. Growth scans in the last three months for the baby's weight, fluid and cord blood flow. Dr. Ragavi tells you where each scan is done and explains every report.
Later tests. A glucose test (GTT) at 24 to 28 weeks, and haemoglobin again in the third trimester, because gestational diabetes and anaemia can both appear late.
A note on scans
Sex determination of the foetus is not done at RV Clinic, and no scan report here will state it. It is a punishable offence under the PCPNDT Act, 1994.
Care and treatment through the nine months
Tablets you will take. Folic acid from before conception to 12 weeks, for the baby's spine and brain. Iron and calcium from the second trimester. If your thyroid is low, thyroxine is started and adjusted. Vomiting, acidity, constipation and piles all have safe treatments.
If a problem is found. Gestational diabetes is managed with a diet plan first, then tablets or insulin if sugars stay high. High blood pressure is watched with tablets and extra scans. Twins, a low placenta, a slow-growing baby or a previous caesarean move you into high-risk care.
Birth planning. From about 34 weeks you and Dr. Ragavi plan the delivery together. Most women with a normal pregnancy and a head-down baby can try for a normal delivery. A caesarean is advised when it is safer for you or the baby: a breech baby, a placenta covering the cervix, two previous caesareans. After one caesarean, a normal delivery is possible in selected cases.
After delivery. A check in the first two weeks, then a postnatal visit at six weeks: bleeding, stitches, breastfeeding, mood, piles, and contraception and family planning advice before your periods return.
Where treatment happens
Every check-up, scan, blood test request and follow-up happens at RV Clinic Madipakkam or RV Clinic Thalambur, whichever is closer to you. The Thalambur clinic, near the IT parks at Navalur and Siruseri, keeps evening hours.
Delivery, normal or caesarean, happens at Unittas Multispeciality Hospital, which is 21 km from the Madipakkam clinic and 5 km from the Thalambur clinic. Dr. Ragavi delivers there herself. RV Clinic is an outpatient clinic. No delivery or operation is done at either clinic address.
What to expect at your appointment
- Call or WhatsApp the clinic to confirm a pregnancy or book a first antenatal visit.
- Bring your home test result, the date your last period started, any old reports and your medicines.
- Dr. Ragavi takes your history, checks blood pressure and weight, and examines you. A lady attender is present, in a separate examination room.
- If the dates are right, the scan is done at the same visit. If it is too early to see a heartbeat, she tells you when to come back.
- You leave with a blood test list, folic acid, a visit schedule and a written plan.
Frequently asked questions
When should I go for my first pregnancy check-up?
As soon as a home test is positive. The first visit confirms the pregnancy is in the right place, fixes your due date and starts folic acid.
Pregnancy confirm panna scan eppo edukkanum?
Last period date-la irundhu 6 to 7 weeks-la scan edutha heartbeat theriyum. Adhukku munnadi scan edutha onnum theriyaama bayam aagum. So 6 weeks varaikkum wait panni clinic-ku vaanga.
Is normal delivery possible after one caesarean?
Often, yes. It depends on why the first caesarean was done, the gap since then and how this baby is lying. Dr. Ragavi assesses this around 36 weeks and tells you plainly which option is safer.
Will the scan tell me if it is a boy or a girl?
No. Sex determination is not done at RV Clinic, and no scan report here will state it. It is a punishable offence under the PCPNDT Act.
I had bleeding in early pregnancy. Is the baby lost?
Not necessarily. Light spotting in the first weeks is common, and many of these pregnancies continue normally. But it must be checked with a scan the same day; it can also mean a threatened miscarriage or a pregnancy in the tube.
Baby movement innaikku feel aagala, enna pannanum?
